Aging Gracefully

Barbara Walters, the most decorated woman in the history of journalism, is retiring at the age of 84.  She's not sick, nor tired, nor are her razor-sharp journalistic abilities diminished.  On Monday, May 19th, 2014, she will awaken without her alarm clock as she enjoys her first full day of retirement since joining ABC News  in 1976. In a final interview with ABC News this week, she revealed her plan to "lounge in bed until 3 pm on Monday," and enjoy a well-earned rest.

So what's her secret? Most of us who are close to 84 years old would be happy with half her energy.  She explained in an interview with Bill O'Reilly of Fox News that she credited good genes for her resilience and longevity. No special diet. No magic formula. Just favorable genetics. Well there's nothing the rest of us can do about our genes, but there are ways to age gracefully. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Eat Right

Ms. Walters has no special diet, but she knows eating right does make a difference.  A lifetime of high fat, high cholesterol, high sugar eating is damaging to a person's health and vitality.  And eating better, starting now can make a difference in energy, appearance, and longevity. So eat right, include plenty of fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. It's not magic, but it's a formula that works.

 2. Take Your Medicine

Today's modern medicine are a miracle.  They control blood pressure, regulate clotting, stabilize blood sugars, and provide a hundred other benefits that improve your quality of life, and prevent a major health issue from occurring. So be sure you take them.  If you need help managing them, buy a pill organizer so you only have to sort them correctly once a week.  Or ask your Assisted Living Community if they provide assistance with medicines.

3. Choose to Age Gracefully

Maybe you have health issues, or require assistance with daily activities.  These things can be a pain, but with the right help, you should be able to enjoy your life completely. Don't dwell on what you aren't able to do, but celebrate the joy of life in every way you are able.  Choose to participate in life.  Be kind and considerate to others, and demonstrate grace to those who you are able to help because it adds value to their life and yours.

4. Live More Fully

Finally, choose to live in an environment where life is celebrated.  Vista Springs has a difference that is palpable the moment you walk in the door. Energetic and modern, Vista Springs is full of life.

5. And One More Thing…

If you get the chance, interview every king and president you meet.
